MA Studentship in the History of Medicine - Queen Mary, University of London (UK) - Deadline: June 20, 2011

MA Studentship in the History of Medicine

The Centre for the History of the Emotions at Queen Mary, University
of London, has been invited by the Wellcome Trust to nominate a
candidate for an MA scholarship in the history of medicine and
humanities in the Trust’s open competition.

The Centre invites applications for this nomination. It wishes to
propose a student with an interest in the area of the history of
medicine and the history of the emotions. If successful in the
Wellcome Trust’s open competition procedure, the student will follow
the MA in History within the School of History, taking modules which
where possible link to the theme of the history of medicine and the
emotions. The dissertation element will also be in this area. Details
about the MA in History may be consulted at:
http://www.history.qmul.ac.uk/postgraduate/masters/mahistory/index.html

New MA modules (including, in particular, a new module on ‘The History
of Medicine and the Body’) will run in 2011-12.

The Centre for the History of the Emotions is a lively
interdisciplinary research centre located within the Faculty of Arts
and Social Studies, and is managed from the School of History. The
Centre has received a five-year Wellcome Trust Enhancement Award in
the History of Medicine to fund a research project – ‘Medicine,
Emotion and Disease in History’ – which investigates how theories,
experiences, and expressions of passions and emotions have developed
in medical contexts since the sixteenth century. Details of the
Centre’s membership and activities can be found online at:
www.qmul.ac.uk/emotions

The studentship is fully funded, providing a maintenance grant at the
rate paid by the Wellcome Trust (£16,222). Fees are also covered by
the Wellcome Trust, at the rate for home students. There will also be
access to further funds for travel and research expenses.

Applicants should have attained (or expect to attain by the end of
2010-11) an excellent BA degree. The competition is open to applicants
studying any historical period from the 16th century to the present.
