Workshop: "Using Museum Collections in Teaching History of Science, Technology and Medicine" - 14 June 2011, National Media Museum, Bradford (UK) - Deadline (for registration): June 1, 2011

Registration is now open for the Using Museum Collections in Teaching History of Science, Technology and Medicine workshop, organised by The Subject Centre for Philosophical and Religious Studies. The event will be held in the afternoon of 14th June at the National Media Museum, Bradford.

The workshop will bring together those teaching HSTM in higher education with staff from major science, technology and medicine museums throughout the UK. Despite many links being formed between museums and HSTM departments, museum collections remain, on the whole, underused resources in teaching. Given the success of collaboration at research level—most notably AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Awards—it seems an opportune time to seek new ways in which HSTM departments can work with museums. The workshop will look at how the study of museum collections (including archives and libraries) can be incorporated into standard taught courses as well being used for dissertation and independent study modules. The aim of the event is to provide a forum to present details of extant collaborations, consider potential uses of collections, discuss good practice, share ideas, and initiate links.

Confirmed speakers include:
Claire Jones (Centre for the History of Medicine, University of Warwick)
Jo Booth (National Media Museum)
Delphi Tatarus (Thackray Museum)
John Beckerson (Manchester Museum of Science and Industry)
Tim Procter (National Railway Museum)
Alison Watson (Royal Armouries)
Richard Dunn (National Maritime Museum)
Richard Gunn (Subject Centre for PRS)
Plus more speakers TBC

The workshop, including afternoon tea and refreshments, will run from 12:30 to 17:30.

Attendance at the event is free of charge, but places are limited. To register please go to: https://my.heacademy.ac.uk/multievents/displayEvent.asp?Type=Full&Code=p...
