STEP - Science and Technology in the European Periphery

The School of Humanities at Leeds intends to offer two Graduate Teaching Assistantships in Philosophy or History and Philosophy of Science for its full-time PhD programmes.

The scholarships are available from 19th September 2012 and consist in a payment of £12000 per annum for teaching and maintenance, along with a full fee waiver for Home/EU students and partial fee waiver (equivalent to full Home/EU rate) for international students.

The scholarships are available only to new PhD applicants, not to currently registered PhD students.

Scholarship recipients are expected to provide teaching and teaching support for Philosophy/HPS for up to six hours per week on average. Appropriate training is normally compulsory for all holders of these awards.

These awards are tenable for one year in the first instance in the School of Humanities, and are renewable annually for your second and third years of study, subject to satisfactory academic progress, satisfactory performance in teaching, and on condition that you are successful in the ‘transfer’ process and eligible for full PhD registration at the start of your second year of research.

The awards must be taken up by no later than 19th September 2012 and registration must be completed by that date (the award cannot be deferred).

Graduate Teaching Assistantship Application Details

The closing date for applications to these scholarships is Monday 26th March 2012. It is anticipated that interviews will take place in mid-April.

Applicants must have applied for a place of study, and submitted all supporting documents, prior to the scholarship deadline. Information on how to apply for a research degree can be found in the Postgraduate Study in Philosophy & HPS section of our website.

In addition to the documents required for the research degree application, applicants must submit a 500 word teaching statement which should address any past teaching experience.

Applicants who have already submitted a research degree application for the coming year need only provide the teaching statement and make sure that any outstanding supporting documents are submitted by the deadline.

Eligibility for the scholarship is conditional on securing a place on the PhD in Philosophy or HPS at University of Leeds.

The Department operates a professional training and development scheme for postgraduates: as part of this scheme, successful applicants are often given the opportunity to undertake additional teaching, which is paid at an hourly rate. The Department also offers its PhD students financial support for conference attendance.
