Five PhD Studentship in Philosophy/HPS 2011-12

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Leeds intends to offer up to five studentships in Philosophy and History and Philosophy of Science to suitably qualified candidate for its full-time or part-time PhD programmes.

Two studentships are associated with the AHRC Block Grant Partnership and will pay full Home/EU fees (currently £3,732 p.a. ft) and the standard maintenance component for AHRC doctoral awards (currently £13,590 p.a. ft). Up to two additional departmental studentships will be offered paying full Home/EU fees and substantial maintenance awards.

In addition, there is an AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award (available full-time or part-time) in the History of Technology. This studentship is associated with Professor Graeme Gooday's project "Whose Call?" on the history of the telephone (the second PhD studentship for this project). The Department will also be offering an AHRC Research Preparation Masters award as well as a number of fees-only awards and small bursaries in support of study on its taught and research MA programmes.

UK/EU applicants should complete the AHRC application form found here. UK/EU applicants who apply for AHRC funding will automatically be considered for the Departmental Studentships.

International applicants should complete the application form found here. International applicants are only eligible to apply for the Departmental Studentships.
All studentship applications should include a 500 word PhD proposal, a copy of your degree transcripts and a sample of written work (not less than 3000 words in length). Applicants should also arrange for three academic referees to submit references directly to the Department. The closing date for studentship applications is Friday 11th March 2011.

While applicants need not secure admission prior to application for this studentship, to ensure eligibility for studentships it is strongly recommended that applicants apply for admission at the earliest opportunity. Only one set of supporting documents should be provided, which will be used for both the studentship and admission applications.

All PhD studentships are tenable for 3yr (f-t) or 5yr (p-t) from October 2011. The awards are conditional on acceptance of an offer of admission to study for PhD in the Department. Renewal of the studentship each year is subject to satisfactory progress towards PhD completion.

The Department operates a professional training and development scheme for postgraduates: as part of this scheme, successful applicants are often given the opportunity to undertake teaching, which is paid at an hourly rate. The Department also offers its PhD students financial support for conference attendance.
