Abstract

In Reconstructing Ottoman Engineers. Archaeology of a Profession (1789-1914), Darina Martykánová investigates the formation of a new professional group during the long 19th century. In the Europe of the time, modernisation meant technology; railroads and new infrastructures must be created. Torn between the legacy of their glorious past and the challenges of the future, the Ottoman elites implemented strategies to develop the necessary knowhow, embedding it in their social milieu.
The volume is the sixteenth in a series based on dissertations by doctoral researchers who have participated in CLIOHRES.net, a Network of Excellence for History, supported by the Directorate General for Research of the European Commission through its Sixth Framework Programme.
