AISU Conference

Deadline for Submission: 15 Feb 2011

Earthquake Science and Knowledge between the Middle-Ages, the Old
Regime and Modernity (Europe, Ottoman Empire, Asia)
Nora Lafi (ZMO-BMBF Berlin) Denis Bocquet (Ecole des Ponts ParisTech-LATTS)

From Aleppo (1138) to Naples (1456), from Lisbon (1531-1755) to Algiers
(1715) or from Messina (1908) to Tokyo (1923), cities have been throughout
history the victims of devastating sismic events. These traumatic moments
were also the occasion to stimulate reflections about the nature of
earthquakes, their origns and possible ways to minimize their
consequences. The object of this session is to set a panorama of the
evolution of knowledge, both scientific on the origins of the phenomenon
and practical on the construction rules to be implemented in order to
soften their effects. Scientific treatises and urban regulations are the
two main aspects papers are expected to deal with, as well as the
relationship between knowledge, gouvernance and practices.
