The Bavarian State Library Munich (BSB), the Institute for European History Mainz (IEG), the German Historical Institute Paris (DHIP) and the Historisches Kolleg Munich are hosting an international conference on "Scholary communication in the digital age" on 20-21 January 2011 in Munich. During the conference, recensio.net, review platform for European history, will be launched.

With the international conference the hosting institutions are responding to the changes for the review system in the historical sciences resulting from the increasing digitalization of scholarly communication and publication channels. Facing the constantly growing number of new publications, »scholarly communication in the digital age« calls for an open and fast access to scientific book reviews. Online review journals register steadily increasing usage rates.

Will the traditional form of book reviews be changed by new publication forms? Which form will scientific reviewing take to use the potential of the Internet and web 2.0? What does that mean for established standards? Will new forms of reviews change the communication amongst scholars and between disciplines — and facilitate international glances on new publications? What are the potentials and risks?

Speakers from different European countries will report on current developments in scholarly communication based on experience from their own country or a specific historical review journal. With the focus of the evening lecture we aim at building a bridge to journalistic reviewing, which plays an important role especially in the field of historical works. What is the difference between a scientific and a journalistic review? Does the growing digitalization lead to a change of expectations of the (newspaper) reader regarding the choice of books or the character of reviews?

Before the evening lecture, we invite all media representatives and editors to get informed on the conference and recensio.net - review platform for European history during an informal talk with the organizers. recensio.net is a joint project of the conference's organizers (funded by the DFG - German Research Foundation) which will be launched officially at the beginning of the second conference day: www.recensio.net

There will be no conference fee but we would like to ask you to register until Friday 14th January 2011.
